The hardware is on a depreciation schedule that the software refuses to accept.

The body peaks and then it doesn’t. The cells repair with diminishing precision. The recovery times lengthen. The tolerances narrow. What the machinery could absorb at twenty — the missed sleep, the poor fuel, the physical punishment, the recovery from injury — it processes at forty with less efficiency and at sixty with considerably less. This is not failure. It is the design running its complete arc. The machinery was built to function across a lifespan, not to function identically across it.

The mind, however, maintains a model of the body that lags behind reality by approximately a decade. The self-image updates slowly. The internal picture of capacity reflects who the machinery was, not who it is now. The forty-year-old expects the thirty-year-old’s recovery. The sixty-year-old expects the fifty-year-old’s range. The gap between the model and the hardware produces a specific kind of confusion — the system is consistently surprised by what it can no longer do, because the internal picture hasn’t been updated with the current specs.


Here is what is actually happening: the chassis is changing specification. The range is adjusting. The maintenance requirements are increasing. The recovery windows are widening. None of this is optional, negotiable, or indicative of personal failure. The machinery has a service life, and the specifications change across that life according to a schedule the operator did not set and cannot modify beyond a narrow range.

What the one at the controls can do: update the internal model. Match the expectations to the current hardware, not to the remembered hardware. Adjust the maintenance protocol — more rest, higher-quality fuel, more deliberate movement — to match the machinery’s current needs rather than its former tolerances. Accept that the trade is real: what diminishes in capacity often increases in calibration. The older hardware has more data. The pattern recognition is deeper. The threat-detection system, having encountered more false alarms, fires with more precision. The operator who has been in the chair for decades has a depth of signal-reading that the younger model, for all its superior recovery time, simply hasn’t accumulated.

The equipment is aging. The one watching the equipment is not. That distinction, which appears in various forms throughout this manual, is nowhere more relevant than here.
