The social hardware has a hierarchy detector that never turns off.
The system scans every interaction for rank: who has power, who doesn’t, where this organism falls in the order. The detector was built because hierarchy was, for most of the species’ history, the structure that determined access to resources, protection, and mating opportunities. Knowing one’s position was essential. Acting outside one’s position was dangerous.
The hardware still runs this assessment in every room the organism enters. Meeting, family gathering, conversation with a stranger — the ranking circuit activates and produces a positioning signal: defer, compete, or assert. The signal arrives before conscious evaluation. The organism has already adjusted its posture, its tone, and its degree of deference before the one at the controls has decided whether any of that is warranted.
Authority — real authority, as opposed to the hardware’s ranking assessment — exists when one system’s decisions genuinely affect another system’s conditions. The boss who can terminate employment has authority. The doctor whose assessment shapes treatment has authority. The parent whose responses shape a developing system’s installation has authority.
The hardware’s error is that it responds to the signal of authority — confidence, status markers, social position, volume — with the same deference it gives to the reality of authority. The organism that broadcasts authority signals may or may not have actual power over this system’s conditions. The ranking circuit doesn’t check. It responds to the broadcast.
To assess: does this person’s assessment actually affect my conditions? Can their decision change what happens to this machinery? If yes — the authority is structural, and acknowledging it is accurate. If no — the deference is the hardware responding to a social signal, not to an actual power differential. The organism adjusting its behavior for a stranger’s confidence is running the ranking protocol on data that doesn’t warrant it.
The one at the controls has exactly one authority that doesn’t depend on anyone else’s assessment: the authority over what happens in this particular control room. No external rank changes that. No hierarchy overrides it. The social hardware will keep scanning for position. The one in the chair can let it scan without letting it steer.
