Certainty

Certainty is the mind’s signal that a model has been promoted past questioning.
The software builds models and assigns confidence levels. Low confidence: this might be true. Medium confidence: this is probably true. High confidence: this is true. Certainty is the top of the scale — the system’s declaration that the model is no longer provisional. The questioning apparatus shuts down for that item. The model is treated as fact.
The Beliefs entry covers how this happens. What this entry addresses is the signal itself — the feeling of being certain — and why it is one of the least reliable indicators in the entire system.
Certainty feels like knowledge. It is not. It is a confidence level the mind assigns to its own models — and the assignment process is influenced by repetition (heard it enough times), emotional intensity (learned it during a charged state), source authority (came from a powerful figure), and confirmation accumulation (saw enough evidence that seemed to support it, while filtering evidence that didn’t). None of these factors correlate reliably with accuracy. The system can be certain about things that are false and uncertain about things that are true.
The most dangerous form: certainty about another person’s interior. I know what they’re thinking. I know why they did that. I know what they meant. The Relationships entry established that no one has access to another person’s control room. The certainty signal fires anyway, because the mind has built a model and promoted it. The model feels like a window. It is a painting.
To hold certainty usefully: treat it as information about the system’s confidence level, not as confirmation that the model is correct. The machinery is reporting: I am confident about this. What the one at the controls can do is ask: why? What data produced this confidence? Has the data been tested? Could the model be wrong without the system noticing?
The willingness to question one’s own certainty is not weakness. It is the recognition that the confidence meter and the accuracy meter are different instruments.
