Comparison
2 min read · 386 words
The social monitoring system runs a continuous benchmark: how does this organism measure against adjacent organisms?
The comparison circuit is automatic, fast, and not under voluntary control. The system scans other people and produces an assessment: ahead, behind, equal. The assessment covers whatever variable the system is currently tracking — appearance, achievement, resources, status, capability, relationship quality, happiness. The scan is indiscriminate. It runs on the person at the next desk, the stranger on the screen, the friend who just announced something.
The signal served a purpose. In the environment it was built for, relative position within the group determined access to resources, mates, and protection. Knowing where the organism stood relative to others was survival data.
The mechanism has two failure modes in the current environment.
Incomplete data. The comparison circuit builds its assessment from visible output. It does not have access to the other system’s internal state — the cost of their achievement, the quality of the experience behind the presentation, the signals their machinery is producing beneath the surface. The organism compares its own full experience (including the signals, the doubt, the difficulty) against someone else’s curated exterior. The assessment is structurally biased toward finding itself deficient.
Infinite reference pool. The hardware was built to compare against a group of roughly a hundred and fifty — the tribe. The current environment provides an essentially unlimited comparison set. The system that once measured against the nearby now measures against everyone visible, everywhere, constantly. No organism can rank favorably against all of humanity across all variables. The comparison circuit, fed this input, produces a chronic deficit signal that has nothing to do with the actual condition of the organism.
To work with the signal: recognize it as the ranking system’s output, not as an assessment of value. The circuit is doing what it does — scanning and ranking. The ranking is data about relative position on a specific variable. It is not data about the operator. The number that ranks, as the Money entry established, is not the reader of the number.
When the comparison signal fires: name the variable being tracked. Check the data. Acknowledge the signal. And note that the circuit has never, in the entire history of its operation, produced the output enough.
