Eating

1 min read · 319 words

Eating is the machinery’s fueling process, and the system that governs it was not designed for current conditions.

The Vegetables entry covers fuel quality. The Appetite entry covers the wanting signal. This entry covers the act itself — the behavior of taking in fuel and the signals that surround it.

The hardware was built for intermittent feeding. Fuel was scarce, available unpredictably, and the system that found it ate as much as possible because the next opportunity was uncertain. The wiring says: eat when food is present, eat quickly, eat calorie-dense options first. This was optimization under scarcity. Under abundance, the same wiring produces overconsumption — not because the organism lacks discipline but because the hardware is running scarcity protocols in an environment that has eliminated the scarcity.

The signals around eating are layered. The base layer is hunger — the body’s actual fuel-need signal. Above it: appetite (the reward system’s wanting, which fires for cue and memory as much as for need), emotional eating (using the fuel intake to suppress or manage emotional signals the system doesn’t want to process), social eating (the group bonding protocol that associates shared food with connection and safety), and identity eating (the food choices that serve the story in the identity file rather than the machinery’s actual requirements).

To eat from the control room: check the base signal first. Is the body actually requesting fuel? Where is the signal originating — stomach (genuine hunger), mind (craving loop), emotional system (suppression via intake)? The answer determines the appropriate response. Genuine hunger: eat. Craving loop: the Cravings entry applies. Emotional suppression: the food won’t resolve the signal it’s covering.

The organism that can distinguish between the layers — and respond to the actual signal rather than the loudest one — is working with the fueling system as designed rather than as hijacked.
