The machinery came with certain capacities installed at a higher baseline than standard.
Not every unit shipped with the same specifications. Some hardware arrived with processing speed calibrated unusually high. Some arrived with motor coordination that outperforms the mean. Some with a pattern-recognition system that catches structure others miss, or a social-signal reader running at exceptional resolution, or a spatial-processing module that maps physical space with unusual accuracy.
These are the gifts — not in the sentimental sense, but in the specification sense. They are features of this particular build. The organism didn’t earn them. They were part of the initial configuration.
The complication is that gifts don’t come with labels. The system doesn’t produce a clear readout that says this is your high-function module. The operator discovers gifts indirectly — through the activities that produce the Flow entry’s absorption signal with less resistance, through the skills that develop faster than expected, through the outputs other control rooms recognize before the operator does.
The further complication: gifts unexercised don’t announce themselves. The high-capacity module that never receives input runs quietly in the background, indistinguishable from standard equipment. The organism may carry significant capacity in a domain it has never tested. The Purpose entry’s alignment signal often fires strongest when a gift finally gets used — the hardware running the operation it was built to run.
To identify gifts from the control room: look for what comes easily. Not what the system was told it should be good at — what actually requires less effort to produce competent output. Look for what other operators notice before you do. Look for what produces frustration when it can’t be used — the restlessness that shows up when a high-capacity system has no load.
The gift is the capacity. What gets built with it is the operator’s jurisdiction.
