Greed is the acquisition signal running past its useful range.

The system was built to accumulate. In scarcity environments, the organism that secured more resources — food, shelter, alliances, territory — survived longer and reproduced more successfully. The acquisition circuitry was built accordingly: pursue, obtain, secure, pursue again. The cycle has no built-in termination point. The system was not designed to recognize enough, because in the environment that built it, enough was a temporary state that could reverse at any moment.

Greed is this circuitry running in an environment where the termination point should be obvious but the hardware can’t see it.


The operator with more than sufficient resources who continues accumulating with escalating intensity is not malfunctioning. The equipment is doing exactly what it was designed to do — pursuing the next unit with the same urgency it would apply if the supply were genuinely scarce. The wiring doesn’t update based on the actual stockpile. It runs the same pursuit code regardless of how much has already been secured.

The signal feels like need. That is the complication. The system produces the acquisition impulse with the same urgency whether the organism is genuinely undersupplied or sitting on a surplus that would outlast three lifetimes. The one at the controls cannot distinguish between the two by feeling alone — the chemistry is identical.


To read the signal accurately from the chair: bypass the feeling and check the actual supply. Not the feeling of scarcity — the actual inventory. Is the organism undersupplied? Is the pursuit addressing a genuine deficit? Or is the acquisition circuitry running on its own momentum, producing urgency signals about a shortage that doesn’t exist?

The pursuit can stop. The circuitry will keep signaling. The operator is not the circuitry.
