Leaving

2 min read · 339 words

Leaving is the act of removing the organism from conditions that no longer serve its operation — and the system resists it even when the assessment supports it.

The hardware is wired for stability. The Attachment entry covered the bonding mechanism — the system’s investment in maintaining existing connections, environments, and structures. The sunk cost signal fires (resources already invested, leaving means writing them off). The loss-aversion signal fires (leaving guarantees the loss of what’s present, while staying preserves at least the familiar). The identity signal fires (the operator has built parts of their compiled file around these conditions, and leaving requires restructuring the file).

These signals are real and they are not necessarily authoritative. The system produces resistance to leaving because the wiring values stability over optimization. The conditions may have deteriorated past the point where staying serves the operator, but the resistance signals fire with the same intensity as if the conditions were still viable.

The diagnostic from the chair: separate the resistance signal from the assessment. The hardware says don’t leave — but what does the operator’s genuine assessment of the conditions say? Is the relationship still producing net benefit? Is the job still aligned with the values the one at the controls actually holds? Is the environment still supporting the organism’s function? Or has the system continued past the point of useful operation because the resistance to leaving is louder than the data?

Leaving requires something the system finds uncomfortable: the acknowledgment that the investment in the current conditions has reached its return and that further investment will not produce the change the operator has been modeling. The Future entry’s illusion — things will get better if I stay — can run indefinitely, keeping the organism in conditions that have stopped serving it.

The decision to leave is the operator reading the gauges, overriding the stability wiring, and moving toward conditions that better match the current assessment — even when the hardware protests.
