Margin

Margin is the unused capacity the system holds in reserve — and the modern operator typically runs without it.
The hardware was designed with built-in recovery capacity. The organism encountering an unexpected demand — illness, crisis, sudden load increase — was supposed to have available resources to redirect. Margin is that reserve: the energy not committed, the time not scheduled, the attention not allocated, the emotional bandwidth not consumed.
The organism running at full allocation — every hour scheduled, every unit of energy committed, every resource deployed — has no margin. When the unexpected arrives (and the unexpected always arrives), the system has nothing to redirect. The response is either failure (the demand goes unmet) or breakdown (the system produces the resources by cannibalizing from systems already running at capacity).
The Burnout entry’s trajectory often begins here: the organism running at zero margin for long enough that any additional demand produces crisis.
From the chair: margin is not wasted capacity. It is structural reserve. The operator who deliberately maintains some uncommitted energy, some unscheduled time, some unallocated attention is not being lazy or inefficient. They are maintaining the system’s ability to respond to conditions that haven’t arrived yet.
Build the margin before it’s needed. It cannot be created during the crisis it was designed for.
