Momentum

Momentum is the system’s tendency to continue in the direction it’s already moving.
The hardware resists changes in direction. The organism that has been pursuing a goal continues pursuing it — even past the point of useful return — because the effort system has built up operational momentum. The organism that has been idle continues idle because the inertia of rest operates with the same physics. Starting is harder than continuing. Stopping is harder than not having started.
The mechanism has a specific application: the beginning of any new direction requires disproportionate effort. The first day of the habit is harder than the hundredth. The first conversation is harder than the ongoing relationship. The first step of the project is harder than the middle. This is not because the organism is weak. It is because momentum must be generated before it can sustain. The initial investment is higher than the maintenance cost.
The operator who understands this calibrates their expectations accordingly. The early resistance is the system building momentum, not evidence that the direction is wrong. The Grit entry’s sustained effort through the reward-free zone is, in momentum terms, the cost of getting the system moving. Once moving, the system’s own inertia helps sustain the operation.
The reverse applies equally. The organism that wants to change direction must first overcome the existing momentum — which means the effort required to stop a pattern or leave a condition is also disproportionate to what maintaining the new direction will eventually cost.
