Needs

The machinery has non-negotiable requirements. Ignoring them does not make them optional.

The system needs fuel, water, sleep, safety, movement, and connection. These are design requirements — the hardware degrades without them the way an engine degrades without oil. The operator who provides them consistently runs a different system than the one who provides them sporadically. This is not philosophy. It is maintenance.

Beyond the physical, the system has psychological needs that are equally mechanical: the need to matter to someone (the Mattering entry), the need for some degree of autonomy (the Freedom entry), the need for competence in some domain (the Mastery entry), the need for connection (the Belonging entry). These are not luxuries. They are the social hardware’s operating requirements, and the system produces specific alarm signals when any of them drops below threshold.

The complication: the system communicates its needs through signals the operator often misreads. The need for connection may present as irritability. The need for rest may present as difficulty concentrating. The need for meaning may present as a vague depression that doesn’t attach to any specific cause. The signal is the system’s report. The operator’s job is to trace the signal back to the actual need rather than treating the surface presentation.

When the system is producing chronic low-grade distress without an identifiable cause, run the needs inventory. Something on the list is below threshold. Find it. Address it. The signal often resolves without any other intervention.
