Openness

Openness is the system’s willingness to receive data that doesn’t match the existing model.
The default mode is defensive: the mind protects its existing models by filtering incoming data through confirmation bias, by discounting contradictions, and by producing resistance when new information threatens the current structure. Openness is the operator choosing to lower the filter — receiving the new data, allowing the model to be challenged, and holding the discomfort of having the existing structure questioned.
The system resists openness for a reason. The existing models represent compiled processing — understanding that took effort to build. New data that contradicts the model threatens that investment. The mind’s defense of its existing structure is the sunk cost mechanism applied to beliefs: I’ve already built this model, and I don’t want to rebuild.
The cost of closed processing: the model calcifies. The organism operating on unchallenged models from five, ten, twenty years ago is running outdated software. The conditions changed. The model didn’t. The gap between the model and reality widens with each refusal to receive updating data.
From the chair: openness is not agreeing with everything. It is receiving the data before deciding. The operator can listen to the contradicting information, assess it against reality, and then accept, modify, or reject it. The assessment happens after reception. The closed system rejects before receiving. The open system receives before assessing.
