Passion is high-intensity engagement, and the culture’s narrative about it is mostly wrong.
The story most operators inherit: passion is the signal that points to the right work, the right person, the right path. The absence of passion is the signal that something is wrong. Find your passion, follow it, and the system will produce the life it was meant for. This story sells well. It also produces decades of operators searching for a feeling that doesn’t reliably arrive on schedule.
The mechanism actually at work: the system produces high-intensity engagement under specific conditions — competence, autonomy, meaningful output, sometimes novelty. These conditions are usually built, not found. The operator who waits for passion to arrive before engaging often waits indefinitely. The operator who engages with available work, builds competence, and accumulates investment often discovers that passion emerged somewhere along the way, after the engagement, not before it.
The other distortion the culture sells: passion is sustained intensity. The system that produces passion at the start does not produce that same intensity continuously. Long engagements move through phases — initial novelty, the difficulty of the middle, the deeper engagement that comes with mastery. The operator who treats every dip in intensity as evidence of misalignment will quit the things that would have produced the deepest engagement.
From the chair: do not orient around passion as a primary signal. Use it as one input among several. Notice what conditions produce the engaged state in your system. Build more of those conditions. Continue past the periods when intensity drops, because those periods are not the verdict — they are the middle of the work, and the engagement returns differently after them.
The operator who chases passion as a feeling rarely lands. The operator who builds the conditions that produce engagement, and who continues through the dips, often discovers that the feeling was waiting on the far side of the work — not on the near side of the search.
