Passivity

Passivity is the operator’s posture of waiting for the situation to act on the system rather than the system acting on the situation.
The organism is built to act. It has motor capacity, decision-making circuitry, and the means to alter its environment within limits. Passivity is the configuration in which these are held offline — the operator declining to use the available agency, often while waiting for someone or something else to produce the change.
The mechanism that drives passivity is usually not laziness. It is more often a calculation, conscious or otherwise: action carries risk, exposure, possible failure. Inaction has its own cost, but the cost is diffuse, postponed, and easier to tolerate. The system, faced with this calculation, often defaults to inaction not because it is preferred but because it is less acutely uncomfortable than action would be.
The hidden cost: the conditions the operator is waiting for someone else to change usually go unchanged. The relationship that needs the conversation. The job that needs the request. The body that needs the movement. The pattern that needs the interruption. None of these resolve by being waited out. The waiting is itself the choice that produces the continued condition.
From the chair: passivity disguises itself as patience, as humility, as not wanting to make trouble. The disguises matter because they make the configuration harder to detect. The diagnostic question: am I declining to act because the timing is wrong and action would be premature, or am I declining to act because action is uncomfortable and inaction lets me avoid it.
The first is patience. The second is passivity. The first preserves agency for when conditions allow it to land. The second relinquishes agency and waits for the situation to resolve itself, which it usually doesn’t.
The intervention is small action against the configuration. Not the full address of the situation. The smallest move that demonstrates the system can move at all. Once that occurs, the next move becomes available. Passivity dissolves not through deciding to be active, but through producing one piece of evidence that activity is possible.
