Perception

Perception is the system’s interpretation of input, presented to the operator as direct experience.
The hardware does not deliver raw reality. It delivers a processed version — light hitting the retina becomes a recognized object, sound waves become recognized speech, sensation in the body becomes a categorized state. This processing happens before the operator has access to the input. What arrives in awareness is already an interpretation, presented as if it were the thing itself.
This produces a structural illusion: the operator believes they are perceiving the world directly. They are perceiving the system’s model of the world. The model is usually accurate enough to operate by, but it is not the world. It is the system’s best current rendering, shaped by past inputs, current expectations, the emotional state during processing, and the assumptions the system has compiled about what is likely to be present.
The implications matter. Two operators in the same situation perceive different situations, because their models differ. One sees threat, the other sees opportunity. One sees criticism, the other sees feedback. Neither is reading the situation directly. Both are reading the situation through their own processing, and the processing produces what the system reports as obviously what’s happening.
From the chair: the operator’s perceptual report is data, not verdict. I perceive this situation as hostile is true. This situation is hostile may or may not be true. The first is a report about the system’s interpretation. The second is a claim about the situation itself, which the system cannot make with certainty because the system only has access to its own processing.
The operational adjustment: hold perceptions with a degree of distance. This is what my system is currently producing about this input. Compare against other inputs — what does another operator’s reading produce, what does the situation look like from a different vantage, what is the system’s processing being shaped by today. The perception that survives this comparison is closer to accurate. The perception that doesn’t is the system’s interpretation, presented as fact.
The world is not what the system says it is. The system’s report is the operator’s best current information, and the operator who knows this operates more accurately than the one who confuses the report with the territory.
