Perseverance

Perseverance is the operator’s capacity to continue an effort past the point where the system is reporting give up.
The hardware produces a quitting signal. It arrives when the effort has been sustained, the result hasn’t yet landed, and the energy budget is being depleted. The signal is functional — the system is reporting that current strategy is producing diminishing returns and resources should be reallocated. Sometimes the signal is correct and quitting is the right response. Sometimes it is incorrect and the result was about to land. Distinguishing the two is the operator’s job.
The mechanism the perseverant operator works with: the quitting signal does not reliably correlate with whether the effort is going to succeed. The signal arrives when the system is tired, not when the strategy is failing. The system gets tired before the strategy has had time to produce its result, particularly for any effort that requires sustained input over weeks, months, or years. The operator who quits whenever the signal fires has selected for short cycles only — and many of the effort patterns that produce significant results require longer cycles.
The opposite mistake: ignoring the signal entirely. The operator who never quits is selecting for a different dysfunction — continuing efforts that have stopped producing returns, refusing to reallocate, sunk-cost-fallacying through years of work that should have been redirected. Perseverance without assessment becomes its own pathology.
From the chair: when the quitting signal fires, run the assessment, not the reflex. Ask the operational questions. Is the effort producing measurable progress, even if slow. Has the situation changed in a way that makes the original strategy obsolete. Is the cost of continuation higher than the cost of redirection, accounting for what’s already invested but not allowing it to dominate the calculation. Is this the dip that comes before the result, or the wall that means the result isn’t coming.
If the assessment supports continuation: continue. Perseverance is the practice of running the operation despite the system’s report. Hold the body, do the next small piece of the work, and let the signal report whatever it will report. The signal is not reliable evidence about the strategy. Continuing past it, when the assessment supports doing so, is how long-cycle results get produced.
If the assessment supports redirection: redirect. Quitting is not failure when the strategy has changed. The refusal to quit when quitting is correct is its own form of dysfunction.
