Plateaus

A plateau is the period during a development effort when measurable progress flattens, even though the underlying work is continuing.
The system learns in a specific shape. Early progress is fast — the easy adjustments are available, the obvious gains compound, the operator sees clear improvement and the motivation system is well-fed. Then the easy adjustments are exhausted. The operator continues working and the curve flattens. From the inside, this looks like the work has stopped producing results.
The misreading: the plateau is failure. The system reports that effort is being expended without return, the motivation supply drops, and the operator begins to question whether to continue. Many operators quit at this point. The plateau is when most efforts die — not at the difficult start, but at the apparent stall after the start went well.
What is actually occurring during the plateau: the system is consolidating. The neural changes that produced the initial gains are integrating. The new skill is being moved from conscious effort to background capacity. The next visible advance is being prepared underneath the surface, where the operator can’t observe it. The work that looks like it isn’t producing anything is producing the substrate for the next phase, which lands abruptly when the substrate is sufficient.
From the chair: plateaus are the structural shape of skill development, not its failure. The operator who continues working through the plateau usually emerges with the next visible gain after a period that the surface metrics suggested was wasted. The operator who quits at the plateau loses both the work already done and the gain that was preparing.
The specific intervention during a plateau is not to work harder — that often produces strain without breakthrough. It is to maintain the work, vary the inputs slightly, allow the consolidation time it requires, and accept that the visible curve will be flat for a period whose duration cannot be predicted in advance.
The signal that the plateau is ending: small variations in performance begin to appear. Some attempts go better than others. The new capacity is starting to surface. Within weeks of these small variations, the visible jump usually arrives. The operator who recognizes the plateau as a phase, not a verdict, gets to that jump. The operator who interprets it as the work having stopped working leaves before the result lands.
