Pleasure

Pleasure is the reward signal the system uses to reinforce behaviors that, in the system’s encoded model, support survival or thriving.

The hardware contains a reward system. When certain inputs occur — food, sex, social bonding, rest after exertion, problem-solving, novel experience — the system produces a pleasant signal that marks the input as worth repeating. The signal is functional. It motivates the operator toward inputs the system has identified as valuable, without requiring conscious calculation each time.


Two complications. First: the signal is calibrated for an environment that no longer exists in most of the modern world. The system that produces pleasure for high-calorie food is operating in conditions where high-calorie food is everywhere. The system that produces pleasure for novel input is operating in conditions where novel input arrives every few seconds through a screen. The reward signal is firing accurately according to its programming. The programming was written for a different environment.

Second: the signal can be hijacked. The Addiction entry’s territory. Substances and activities engineered to produce pleasure response disproportionate to their actual functional value have proliferated. The system, encountering one of these, produces strong reward signal — and then, because the value the signal was promising doesn’t actually arrive, produces even stronger signal next time, attempting to find the value the previous engagement was reporting but didn’t deliver. The hijacked reward system runs increasing intensity for diminishing return.


From the chair: pleasure is data, not destination. Notice what produces it in your system. Notice which sources, after the pleasure passes, leave the system better resourced and which leave it depleted. The two categories look identical at the moment of the pleasure signal. They differ in what they produce in the hours and days afterward. The genuine pleasure leaves restoration. The hijacked pleasure leaves depletion and reduced baseline.

The orientation: pursue the pleasures that integrate. Connection. Movement. Real food. Genuine rest. Skilled work. The natural ones the system was built around. Limit the ones that hijack — the engineered, the screen-mediated, the chemically intensified. Not because pleasure is suspect, but because some sources of pleasure leave the system better and some leave it worse, and the moment of the signal does not distinguish between them.

The system was designed to feel good doing the things that maintain it. When pleasure and maintenance are aligned, both are working. When they diverge, the operator pays the difference.
