Pregnancy

2 min read · 457 words

Pregnancy is one operator’s machinery hosting the construction of a new operator’s machinery, and the configuration changes nearly everything about how the host system operates.

The hardware reorganizes. Hormonal cascades shift baseline mood, sleep, appetite, and energy. The body’s resource allocation prioritizes the construction project. Sensory thresholds change. Emotional regulation runs differently. The operator who has run their system in a particular way for years is now running a system that responds differently to identical inputs, and the difference is not voluntary — it is the hardware operating on a temporarily different program.

The cultural narrative often emphasizes either the romantic version (a glowing transformation) or the hardship version (a difficult condition to endure). Both are partial. The actual experience usually contains elements of both, varying day to day, often hour to hour, with the ratio dependent on the individual system and the specific pregnancy. The operator whose first pregnancy ran one way may experience their second running differently, because the hardware’s response is not uniform across instances.

The mind, attempting to manage all of this, often produces difficulty. The expectations the operator carried about how this would go meet the actual experience and don’t match. The narratives from culture and family don’t match either. The body is doing things the operator doesn’t fully understand and didn’t choose. The future is large, irreversible, and uncertain. The system processes all of this on top of the physiological load it is already carrying.

From the chair during pregnancy: lower the bar for what the system is expected to produce. The operating capacity is not what it was, and pretending otherwise produces strain that compounds. Sleep when sleep is available. Eat what the system can tolerate. Reduce non-essential demands. Accept help that is offered.

For the partner of someone pregnant: read the changing system accurately. The person operating this body today is not the same configuration as last week. The emotional reactions, the food sensitivities, the energy patterns — these are real outputs of a system running an unusual program. Responding to the current state, not to the version that existed before pregnancy or the version expected after, is most of the relational work.

For the larger frame: this is one of the operations that produces the next generation of operators. The new system being constructed is the recipient of conditions during construction. What the host system experiences during this period — stress level, nutrition, environment, support — shapes the conditions of the new system’s installation. This is why the support infrastructure for pregnancy matters at the level of public health, not just individual experience. The new operator is being built in the conditions society provides.
