Principles are the operator’s rules for decisions, set in advance, applied during.

The system’s decision-making in the moment is variable. Mood, fatigue, social pressure, recent events — all of these shape what the system produces when faced with a choice. The decisions made under these inputs often differ from the decisions the same operator would make under different conditions, and not necessarily in ways the operator would endorse if they could compare. Principles are the structural correction: pre-decided rules that hold across conditions, so that the operator’s choices in difficult moments aren’t determined by whatever state happened to be present.


The mechanism the principle exploits: pre-commitment is easier than in-the-moment judgment. The operator who has decided in advance — I don’t lie about my work, I always do the workout I committed to, I don’t make important decisions when angry — has already done the harder work in the calmer state when the rule could be considered carefully. In the moment, the rule is just applied. The decision doesn’t have to be re-derived under the conditions that would otherwise distort it.

The mistake operators make: confusing principles with rigidity. The rigid rule is applied without consideration of context — the principle becomes its own justification, and the operator follows it past the point where the reasoning that produced it still holds. The functional principle has known reasons behind it, and remains open to being revised when the reasons no longer apply. The two look similar from outside. The internal posture is different. The first is the operator outsourcing judgment to a rule they no longer think about. The second is the operator using the rule as default while keeping the underlying judgment available for the cases where the default doesn’t fit.


From the chair: the principles worth installing are the ones that protect the operator from their own predictable distortions. The operator who knows they get reactive when criticized installs a principle: do not respond in writing to criticism within the first hour. The operator who knows they overcommit when asked installs a principle: I sleep on requests before saying yes. The operator who knows they overspend when emotionally activated installs a principle: no significant purchases on bad days.

These principles save the operator from themselves at the moments when they are least able to save themselves. They are most valuable not in the easy cases but in the hard ones. The operator who installed the principle wisely benefits from it precisely when they would otherwise have made the worse decision.

Build the rules in calm conditions. Apply them in turbulent ones. Revise them when the underlying reasons stop applying.
