Privilege

Privilege is the unearned advantage the operator received from conditions they didn’t choose, and the system tends not to perceive it.

The hardware notices threats and obstacles. It registers them as data because the system needs to respond to them. Privilege — the absence of certain threats and obstacles — does not register the same way. The thing that didn’t happen is not a salient input. The doors that opened easily, the assumptions made favorable, the obstacles never encountered — these don’t generate signal, because there was nothing for the system to detect. The privileged operator often experiences their life as the result of their own effort, because the parts that were eased by privilege didn’t show up as inputs.


This is a perceptual asymmetry, not a moral failing. The operator running an easier path doesn’t see the easing because there’s nothing to see. The operator running a harder path sees the obstacles vividly because the obstacles are firing the system’s threat-detection continuously. Both operators are reporting their experience accurately. The two reports differ because the conditions differed, and the privileged operator’s report is structurally less informative about the conditions than the unprivileged operator’s is.

The cost of unrecognized privilege is mostly to others. The operator who attributes their outcomes entirely to their own effort tends to interpret the outcomes of operators with less privilege as failures of effort. The interpretation is wrong but feels accurate to the operator producing it, because their own experience was I worked hard and the work paid off, and the parts that depended on starting conditions didn’t enter their report.


From the chair: the diagnostic for unrecognized privilege is the absence question. What threats and obstacles did I not encounter that other operators in different starting conditions did encounter. The early stable home. The functional family. The educational access. The cultural fit with the surrounding power structures. The body that didn’t trigger the threat-detection of the surrounding system. The financial cushion that meant a single setback wasn’t catastrophic. Each of these, when present, eases operations in ways the operator who has them rarely tracks.

This is not a guilt project. It is a calibration project. The operator who can see their own privilege accurately makes better assessments of their own outcomes (correctly attributing some to conditions, some to effort, some to chance) and better assessments of other operators (correctly noting that comparable effort under different conditions can produce very different outcomes). The calibration produces more accurate operation in a world full of operators with different starting conditions.
