Procrastination

Procrastination is rarely laziness. Something in the task is being refused.

The refusal usually comes from one of three places.

The first is not knowing how. The mind stalls when the path is unclear. It disguises confusion as resistance. The fix is to shrink the task until the first step becomes obvious. Not the whole project. Just the next action. Clarity at that scale is enough to move.

The second is fear of the outcome. Completion invites judgment. Finishing the thing means it can be seen, measured, rejected. The stall is protection. The fix is to name the specific fear. Rejection. Inadequacy. Success and what comes with it. Named fears lose authority. They stop running things from the dark.

The third is identity. The task belongs to a version of yourself you’re performing but don’t believe in. The procrastination is honest. You’re refusing work that isn’t yours.

Two paths here.

If the role doesn’t fit—if it was inherited, assigned, or chosen when you were someone else—the work is renegotiation. Name exactly what doesn’t fit. Identify who holds power to change it. If it’s another person: propose, don’t complain. If it’s you: write what you’re holding onto and why, then ask what it’s costing to keep it.

If the role fits but your picture of yourself hasn’t caught up to what you’ve become—you’ve already done the work. The gap is recognition. This isn’t a feeling problem—it’s a data problem. Feelings will insist you’re faking it. Data doesn’t argue.

Write down ten things you’ve done in the last two years that required capability. Not luck. Not help that did it for you. Decisions you made. Problems you solved. Fires you put out. Things that exist because you showed up.

Read the list. The person who did those things is not pretending. That person is not waiting to be ready. That person already acted.

Now: do the task as if the list is true. Not because you feel confident. Because the evidence says the doubt is outdated. The doubt formed earlier. It hasn’t reviewed the record. You have. Act from the record.
