Reminder

A reminder is a deliberate input the operator places to surface information at a future point when they will need it but might not generate it on their own.
The system’s working memory is small. The operator’s current attention can hold only a few things at once. Anything not currently attended to gets dropped from active access — still in the system, but not influencing what’s being decided right now unless it gets resurfaced. Reminders are the structures that resurface information at the appropriate time, by being placed in the path of future attention.
The mistake one direction: relying on internal memory for things the system reliably forgets. The operator who decides they will remember the appointment, the commitment, the medication, without external structure, ends up remembering a fraction. The other fraction surfaces as missed appointments, broken commitments, forgotten doses. The cost compounds across years of missed inputs that reminders would have caught.
The mistake the other direction: cluttering the operating environment with reminders to the point that they become noise. The phone with hundreds of notifications, the task list with thousands of items, the post-it notes that have become wallpaper — none of these function as reminders any longer because the system has habituated to ignoring them. Reminders work by standing out from background; reminders that have become part of the background do not work.
From the chair: install reminders for what the operator reliably forgets, in formats the operator reliably notices. The right format depends on the operator’s specific patterns. For some, calendar entries are reliable. For others, physical notes. For others, alarms. For others, written commitments to other operators who will follow up. The discipline is to find what works for this specific system and use it consistently — not to install whatever the productivity culture currently recommends.
The other application: reminders for the operator’s own slower processes — values, intentions, commitments to themselves. The operator under pressure tends to default to whatever the immediate input demands, even when it conflicts with what they had previously decided was important. Reminders that resurface the operator’s own values and commitments at moments when those would otherwise be overridden by immediate pressure are one of the more useful self-installed structures available. The morning practice that surfaces the day’s intent. The note that returns periodically with what the operator decided in calmer conditions about how to handle some recurring situation. The visible reference point that holds the longer-term direction in view when the short-term pressures would distort it.
The system that has good reminders runs more in line with what the operator has actually chosen. The system without them runs mostly on whatever was loudest at the time. The cumulative difference is significant.
