Tendency

A tendency is the direction the system leans when conditions are ambiguous and no one is actively steering — the pattern the machinery runs more often than its alternatives.
The Habits entry covered patterns compiled through repetition. Tendencies are the earlier substrate — what the system leans toward before habits even form. Some were issued with the hardware. Some were installed through early conditioning. Some compiled later through repeated exposure. Together they constitute the default direction of the system, with the one at the controls having varying degrees of awareness about which tendencies are running.
TWO COMMON MISREADS
Tendency as identity. The inhabitant treats current tendencies as who they are, fixed and not subject to revision. Many tendencies are highly modifiable. The tendency to procrastinate, to withdraw under stress, to interrupt, to take on too much — these are patterns the system runs that can be revised through deliberate practice of alternatives. Treating tendency as identity prevents the revision from being attempted.
Tendency as license. The opposite. That’s just how I am becomes the framing that excuses the inhabitant from developing the regulation or skill that would let them function within the substrate they were given. Some tendencies are deep enough that they will not convert — the introvert will not become extroverted, the high-reactivity system will not become low-reactivity. But many tendencies sit shallower than the inhabitant assumes, and the assumption blocks the work.
THE DIAGNOSTIC
What does the system default to when the inhabitant is tired, stressed, or otherwise not actively selecting?
The honest answer often surfaces patterns the inhabitant had not been consciously tracking. Withdrawal under pressure. Acceleration when uncertain. Saying yes to intake. Reaching for the device. Sharpening tone with the closest available person. These are the running defaults, and they shape outcomes whether or not the inhabitant has named them.
CHANGING WHAT CAN CHANGE
The modifiable tendencies do not bend through intention alone. They bend through repeated practice of the alternative until the alternative becomes available as a competing default.
The system that defaults to withdrawal under stress will not stop defaulting to withdrawal because the inhabitant decides it should. It stops defaulting to withdrawal after the inhabitant has practiced engagement under stress enough times that engagement is also available. The new pattern takes time to compile. The system is being trained, not commanded.
ENVIRONMENT DOES SOME OF THE WORK
Build structures that work with tendencies rather than against them.
The inhabitant with a tendency toward distraction benefits from work environments that reduce inputs — the closed tab, the silenced phone, the room without people in it. The inhabitant with a tendency toward overcommitment benefits from explicit limits set in advance, before the request is in front of them. The inhabitant with a tendency toward late nights benefits from environmental signals — dimmed lights, no screens — that move the system toward sleep without requiring the will to push it there.
The structure does some of the work the tendency would otherwise undermine.
THE TENDENCIES WORTH KEEPING
Notice the ones that run in directions worth keeping.
The tendency to consider before speaking. The tendency to follow through on commitments. The tendency to extend benefit of the doubt. These are also tendencies. They were compiled the same way the costly ones were, and they are subject to the same attrition if the inhabitant stops running the operations that reinforce them.
The work is not only fixing the costly defaults. It is also maintaining the ones that were already running well.
The system defaults somewhere. Knowing where is the start of being able to choose otherwise.
