Trial

3 min read · 617 words

A trial is a configuration of testing — running an action or arrangement with the understanding that the outcome is not yet known and the trial itself is the operation that will produce the relevant information.

The Testing entry covered the small version. Trial is the larger configuration: the new arrangement that is being run on a trial basis, the relationship that is being explored without permanent commitment, the work direction that is being attempted to see if it produces what it promised. The framing matters. The inhabitant who treats a trial as a commitment loses the calibration the trial was supposed to provide. The inhabitant who treats a commitment as a trial loses the commitment’s structural benefits.

DECLINING TRIALS IN FAVOR OF CERTAINTY

The inhabitant who refuses to attempt the new direction without guaranteed outcome continues in the prior direction by default.

The trial would have produced information the prior direction does not produce. Refusing the trial preserves the prior configuration regardless of whether the prior configuration was the right one. The certainty being waited for usually doesn’t arrive. The trial would have produced enough information to proceed.

RUNNING EVERYTHING AS TRIAL INDEFINITELY

The opposite failure mode.

The inhabitant who treats the relationship as continuous trial cannot build what relationships require when they have commitment beneath them. The inhabitant who treats every project as continuous trial cannot do the work that requires sustained commitment past the early uncertainty. The trial frame is appropriate at certain stages. It becomes counterproductive when held past the stage where the relevant information has been produced.

RECOGNIZING WHICH STAGE THE CONFIGURATION IS IN

Has enough information been gathered to warrant commitment, or is more information still needed before commitment makes sense?

The honest assessment usually surfaces which is currently warranted. The configurations where the inhabitant is running the wrong frame for the current stage are the ones that warrant adjustment — moving the trial into commitment when the information is in, or pausing a commitment back into deliberate trial when the original information has been invalidated.

CONVERTING TRIAL INTO COMMITMENT

The relationship that has been explored long enough to know whether it warrants commitment can be either committed to or exited.

Continuing it as indefinite trial often produces accumulating cost without producing the further information further trial was supposed to gather. The conversion to commitment is the operation that allows the configuration to deepen — and the conversion to exit, where the trial revealed the configuration was not right, is the operation that frees the capacity for what comes next.

DEFINE SUCCESS BEFORE RUNNING THE TRIAL

When running a trial deliberately, define what would constitute success and what would constitute the result that warrants ending.

The diagnostic the inhabitant will apply to the trial’s outcomes warrants articulating in advance. The trial that produces ambiguous data because the inhabitant never defined what would count as success or failure does not produce the calibration the trial was supposed to provide. Without the criteria, the trial extends indefinitely under whatever interpretive frame is most comfortable at the moment.

TRIAL AS AVOIDANCE OF COMMITMENT

Sometimes the trial frame is being used to avoid the commitment the conditions warrant.

The relationship the inhabitant has called a trial for years to avoid the implications of either commitment or exit. The job the inhabitant has called a trial to avoid acknowledging it is the actual configuration. The trial frame allows certain operations the commitment frame does not. It also allows avoidance the commitment frame would not allow. The honest assessment separates the cases.

The trial is one frame. Commitment is another. The inhabitant selects which based on what the situation actually warrants.
