Watching

3 min read · 624 words

Watching is the operation of attending to something occurring without intervening in it — the configuration of the observer, distinct from the configuration of the actor.

The hardware can run both. The system that intervenes — the actor configuration — engages the conditions and attempts to change them. The system that watches — the observer configuration — attends to the conditions and registers what is occurring without acting. Both have their uses. The skill is selecting which configuration the current conditions warrant.

The inhabitant who runs only one loses access to what the other produces.

CHRONIC ACTION

Continuous intervening generates consequences that require further intervening. The pattern accumulates substantial activity and prevents the inhabitant from running the watching that would have informed which interventions were appropriate.

The result: high-volume operation with lower-quality information underneath. The inhabitant who never stops to watch ends up acting on stale or wrong models, because the watching is what would have updated them.

CHRONIC WATCHING

The opposite failure mode.

The inhabitant observes extensively while conditions continue producing damage the inhabitant could have addressed. The framing of watching as detachment or non-attachment sometimes obscures that the situation called for action, and the watching was a sophisticated form of avoidance — one with better aesthetics than the cruder forms of avoidance, but the same underlying refusal.

EXAMINING THE CURRENT MIX

Is the inhabitant running adequate watching to inform the actions being taken? Is the inhabitant running adequate action on the conditions the watching has surfaced as warranting it?

The honest assessment usually surfaces specific imbalances — sometimes continuous action without enough watching, sometimes continuous watching without enough action, often an unstable mix that produces inconsistent results.

BUILDING WATCHING IN

For the inhabitant who is under-watching: install deliberate observation operations.

The end-of-day review that surfaces what occurred and what produced it. The longer-arc review that surfaces patterns the daily operation does not surface. The contemplative practice that develops capacity to attend without immediately acting. Watching run as deliberate operation produces information continuous action does not — and the information improves the quality of subsequent actions, often substantially.

BUILDING ACTION IN

For the inhabitant who is under-acting: install deliberate intervention operations.

The decision-making practices that convert watching into action when action is warranted. The accountability structures that produce intervention rather than continued observation. The recognition that some conditions cannot be addressed through observation alone and require the inhabitant to actually act, even with incomplete information. Watching that never produces action is not patience. It is paralysis with a vocabulary.

WATCHING THE OWN SYSTEM

The inhabitant who can watch their own internal processing — the thoughts arising, the emotions running, the patterns playing out — has access to information the inhabitant fully merged with the processing does not have.

The watching does not require intervention on every observed internal event. The watching itself often produces shifts that intervention would not have produced. The thing that was being held tightly loosens when it is observed rather than fought.

WATCHING OTHERS

In relationships, watching the other person well is one of the operations that supports connection.

The inhabitant who has been watching the other person across time has access to information about the other person’s actual configuration, patterns, and current state that the inhabitant who has not been watching does not have. The skilled watching is not surveillance. It is the attention to who the other person actually is, which then allows response to the actual other person rather than to a projected version of them.

The configuration is one of the available modes. The inhabitant who can run both watching and acting, selecting each based on what conditions warrant, has more capacity than the inhabitant who runs only one.
