Fuel is whatever the system converts into operational energy.
The obvious category is food — the Eating entry and the Vegetables entry cover the physical fuel supply. But the machinery runs on multiple fuel types, and the organism that only tracks caloric intake is monitoring one gauge while several others go unread.
Physical fuel: Food, water, oxygen. The body’s direct energy sources. Quality matters more than quantity — the Vegetables entry established this.
Recovery fuel: Sleep. The primary replenishment mechanism. Nothing substitutes. The Sleep entry covers the specification.
Social fuel: Connection, the presence of safe others, the belonging signal. The nervous system uses co-regulation with other systems as a fuel source — the organism in positive social contact literally regulates better than the one operating in isolation.
Meaning fuel: Aligned activity. The Meaning entry’s four conditions (connection, contribution, creation, alignment) produce a fuel the system can run on that depletes more slowly than reward-driven or threat-driven fuel. The organism doing meaningful work has more energy than the organism doing meaningless work at the same intensity — not because the work is easier but because the fuel is different.
To audit the fuel supply: check all categories, not just the physical. The organism that is well-fed but sleep-deprived is running on one fuel and empty on another. The one that sleeps well but is socially isolated is running on physical reserves without the social co-regulation fuel. The one that maintains everything but meaning is running on maintenance fuel without the deeper supply.
The system performs best when all fuel types are being supplied. The performance drops when any single type runs low — and the drop often appears in a different category than the one that’s depleted. The organism that can’t focus may not need more discipline. It may need sleep. Or food. Or a conversation with someone who sees it clearly.
