Talking
3 min read · 650 words
Talking is the operation of converting internal states into outbound speech — and the volume the inhabitant runs determines whether the channel is used or saturated.
The hardware was built to vocalize. The system produces speech to coordinate with other operators, to test ideas in the open air, to release internal pressure through articulation, to perform identity, and sometimes to fill space that silence would otherwise occupy. Each has its uses. The configuration that produces problems is when talking runs continuously without regard to function — the channel saturated with output, with little corresponding listening or pausing.
TOO MUCH TALKING
The pattern: the system uses speech to manage internal states.
Anxiety produces talking. Insecurity produces talking. The discomfort of silence in a social setting produces talking. The inhabitant runs continuous output, not because there is content that warrants articulation, but because the output regulates the internal state. The talking is doing something other than communicating — it is dampening the discomfort the inhabitant would otherwise be sitting with.
The other operators in the conversation receive the volume and gradually disengage. The inhabitant producing it often does not notice the disengagement, because the talking continues to provide the internal regulation it was running for, regardless of whether the listeners are still actually listening.
TOO LITTLE TALKING
The opposite pattern: the system has been conditioned that speech is risky, expensive, or unwelcome.
The internal content stays internal. The inhabitant produces less output than the situation calls for, and the other operators have to work harder to access what the inhabitant is processing. The relationships do not develop the depth that requires the inhabitant’s articulated contribution; the conversations remain shallow because one of the participants is not actually showing up to them in speech.
Both extremes have costs. Neither is the appropriate default; the calibration depends on context.
ASSESSING THE CURRENT CALIBRATION
The diagnostic: does the speech being produced match the function the speech is supposed to serve?
Coordination requires output. Testing ideas requires output. Performing identity requires some output. The honest examination usually surfaces which configuration is currently running. Continuous filling of silence does not serve any of these functions. Continuously refusing to articulate does not serve them either.
FOR TOO MUCH TALKING
Practice the pause.
Notice when the system is producing speech to regulate internal state rather than to communicate something. The internal state will tolerate the silence, even though it initially protests. The protest is the conditioning the talking was relieving, not signal that the silence was wrong. The other operators in the conversation will often appreciate the space the pause creates.
Across repetitions, the inhabitant compiles capacity to be in conversation without continuously producing output, and the talking that does happen is more often the talking that warrants happening.
FOR TOO LITTLE TALKING
Practice articulating before the perfect formulation arrives.
The internal content has value. The other operators benefit from access to it. The inhabitant who waits for perfect articulation rarely produces the articulation; the formulation never feels quite ready. Tolerate the imperfection of the first draft of the thought. The conversation refines it. The other operators contribute their own framings, which often clarify what the inhabitant was trying to articulate.
TALKING TO AVOID FEELING
Notice when the system is using talking to avoid the underlying state.
The grief that produces continuous chatter is not being processed by the chatter. The chatter is preventing the processing. The anxiety that produces compulsive articulation is not being resolved by the articulation; the articulation is the inhabitant’s avoidance of sitting with the anxiety directly.
Sometimes the work is to stop talking and let the underlying state surface. The talking that was running over it can be set down. What is underneath can be felt. The processing that the talking was preventing can run.
The signal is in the speech that warrants speaking. The rest is noise.
