Tenacity

4 min read · 846 words

Tenacity is continuing to apply effort after the initial energy, novelty, and external encouragement have dropped away.

The hardware delivers an initial surge when a new direction is taken. Novelty produces dopamine. Motivation feels available. The path forward seems clear. The surge is finite. It depletes within weeks for most operations, leaving the inhabitant to continue based on something other than the surge. The inhabitants who continue past this point are the ones who eventually produce results in domains that require sustained effort. The inhabitants who stop when the surge depletes are most inhabitants.

This is not a character distinction. It is a structural one. The surge ends. What happens after the surge ends determines what gets built.

DEPLETION IS NOT MISCALIBRATION

The most common misread: interpreting the depletion of the initial surge as a signal that the operation was wrong.

The system reports loss of motivation. The inhabitant reads the report as evidence that the direction was mistaken. Sometimes the reading is correct. Often it is not. Most directions worth pursuing produce surge depletion within their first weeks; the depletion is not evidence about the direction’s value. It is evidence that the surge phase has ended and the inhabitant has reached the territory where tenacity is required.

The inhabitant who reads every depletion as evidence of miscalibration produces a life of repeated starts and predictable abandonments. The pattern is not about which directions were right and which were wrong. The pattern is about reading the predictable surge curve as if it were diagnostic information about the direction itself.

WHAT TENACITY ACTUALLY IS

Tenacity is not the absence of the desire to quit. It is continued action while the desire to quit is running.

The inhabitant with tenacity feels the desire to quit and continues anyway — on the basis of commitments made earlier and direction selected earlier, rather than on the current emotional report. This is not heroic. It is the operating procedure most worthwhile outcomes require. The inhabitant who expects to feel motivated continuously, throughout the full arc of substantial work, will not find what they are looking for; the feeling does not run that way. The continuation happens through the periods when the feeling is absent.

DIAGNOSTIC FOR ANY CURRENT IMPULSE TO QUIT

When the system reports this is not working, examine whether the report is data or noise.

The questions:

  • Has the inhabitant passed the typical surge-depletion phase?
  • Are there objective indicators that the direction is genuinely miscalibrated — results that have plateaued past where progress would normally be measured, evidence that the underlying assumptions of the direction were wrong, signs that the conditions have shifted in ways that make continued effort futile?
  • Or is the report being produced by the predictable depletion that all sustained effort encounters, in the absence of objective signals?

The honest answer usually surfaces which is currently running. The first warrants exit. The second warrants continuation.

PRE-COMMIT TO DURATION

For chronic quitting, the intervention is pre-committing to a duration before evaluation.

The decision I will pursue this for six months and then evaluate converts the quit-or-continue question from a daily one to a scheduled one. The system that would quit on a low day cannot do so; the decision has been made elsewhere, on a different day, with different information. After the duration, the inhabitant evaluates from a position with actual accumulated data rather than from the daily emotional report.

The duration matters. Too short and the surge hasn’t fully depleted yet; the evaluation still happens during the predictable rough phase. Too long and the inhabitant absorbs cost the data would have justified exiting earlier. For most substantial work: months rather than weeks; rarely years on a first commitment, unless the domain genuinely requires that horizon to produce any signal.

THE UNCOMFORTABLE MIDDLE

Tenacity is most needed in the territory after the initial surge and before any external signal of progress.

The territory is uncomfortable because the inhabitant is producing effort without yet receiving evidence that the effort is working. Most inhabitants quit here. The inhabitants who continue are not feeling differently than the inhabitants who quit; they have learned that this is the territory that warrants continuation rather than the territory that warrants exit.

The recognition that this is the structure — that the uncomfortable middle is the normal shape of sustained work, not evidence of failure — is part of what allows continuation.

TENACITY THAT WARRANTS REVIEW

Tenacity that ignores actual signals of miscalibration is not virtue.

Sometimes the operation is genuinely wrong. The direction is mistaken. Continued effort depletes the inhabitant without producing return. The diagnostic for this is honest examination, not the absence of the desire to quit. The inhabitant who can distinguish predictable depletion from actual signal of miscalibration deploys tenacity effectively; the inhabitant who treats all desire to quit as the same thing either quits everything or continues everything past the point of return.

The work continues past the point the system wants to quit. That is what tenacity is for.
