Territory

Territory is what is actually there — distinguished from the map, the model, or the narrative the inhabitant has built about what is there.

The hardware was built to construct models of the surrounding environment and operate from those models. The construction is necessary; the system cannot process raw input directly, so the model is required for action. The model is also always partial. Some aspects of the actual conditions are captured. Some are missed. Some are distorted by what the inhabitant brought to the construction. The functional configuration: act from the model, but continuously check the model against the territory.


WHEN THE MAP STOPS MATCHING

The most common failure mode: operating from the model so completely that the territory stops being registered.

The map says the bridge is there; the inhabitant drives off the cliff because the bridge was removed last year and the map was not updated. The internal model says the relationship works a certain way; the relationship has changed in the intervening years and the inhabitant continues operating from the old model. The model says the work environment values certain operations; the environment shifted and the inhabitant is producing what is no longer wanted. The model says the body can do what it used to do; the body has changed and the inhabitant continues to demand what it can no longer reliably deliver.

The territory has primacy. When the model and the territory diverge, the territory wins. The inhabitant either updates the model or absorbs the cost of the divergence — and the cost compounds across however long the divergence runs.


THE OPPOSITE FAILURE MODE

Refusing to operate from any model, attempting to engage with raw conditions only.

This is not actually possible. The system constructs models continuously and cannot stop. The inhabitant who claims to be operating from territory directly is usually operating from a model that has not been examined, with the unexamined model running quietly underneath the inhabitant’s claim of pure engagement. The functional response is not the absence of a model but active comparison of the model with the conditions.


SCHEDULED EXAMINATION

For chronic model-dependence, the intervention is scheduled deliberate examination.

The quarterly review of major life areas. The honest conversation that surfaces whether the relationship is currently what the inhabitant’s model has been treating it as. The financial check that reveals whether the inhabitant’s sense of the situation matches the actual numbers. The medical examination that reveals whether the inhabitant’s sense of the body matches the actual state. The conversation with the colleague that surfaces what they actually think about the work, rather than what the inhabitant’s model has been assuming.

The examinations are uncomfortable because they sometimes reveal divergence. The discomfort is the cost of operating from current information rather than from outdated assumptions. The inhabitant who avoids these examinations preserves comfort in the short term and accumulates substantial cost across the years the unexamined models continue to diverge.


SUSPECT THE MODEL FIRST

When an operation is failing, suspect the model before suspecting the territory.

The territory rarely cooperates with the inhabitant’s preferences. The model is what the inhabitant can update. The inhabitant who blames the territory for failing to match the model — the people for not being what they were supposed to be, the work for not producing what the inhabitant’s model predicted, the body for not performing as it should — is in a configuration that will not produce learning. The territory is what it is. The model is what can change.

This is not blame the inhabitant. It is operational. The variable the inhabitant has access to is the model. Working that variable produces results that working the unworkable variable does not.


SAME EXAMINATION INTERNALLY

The inhabitant’s model of the inhabitant’s own system also warrants the examination.

The internal model of capability, of energy, of values, of what the inhabitant currently cares about — these also drift. The inhabitant who has been carrying a self-model from earlier life can find themselves operating on assumptions about their own system that no longer match what is actually there. The capacities that have developed since the model was last updated. The interests that have shifted. The values that have changed. The energy patterns that no longer run as they did at thirty or forty.

The self-model warrants the same scheduled examination as the external models. The inhabitant who knows what their current system actually contains operates from better information than the inhabitant running on a self-model from a decade ago.


The map is useful. The territory is what is actually there. Operating well requires both, with the territory having the final word.
