Worship

4 min read · 940 words

Worship is orientation toward something held as larger than the self — and the configuration runs whether or not it has been framed religiously.

The hardware contains the capacity. Operators across cultures and across history have run versions of it: religious worship, awe before nature, devotion to a craft, orientation toward a cause or principle treated as ultimate. The mechanism appears to be partly built in. The person who does not run formal worship usually runs informal versions — the career organized around as if ultimate, the relationship held that way, the ideology, the consumer brand, the celebrity, the political tribe. The orientation runs anyway. What it runs toward is what varies.

The configuration is operationally distinct from ordinary engagement. The person with active worship orientation runs with different stability than the one without — there is a reference point larger than personal preference against which the life can be calibrated. The configuration also produces specific vulnerabilities: the object of worship can be wrong. The cause that turns out to be harmful. The framework that turns out to be distorted. The person who turns out not to deserve the orientation. The capacity is real. What gets worshipped matters substantially.

TWO MISREADS

Dismissal. The capacity gets refused on the basis of not following a religious tradition. The refusal does not eliminate the underlying mechanism. It usually produces someone who runs worship configurations toward objects that were not built to bear the orientation — the career, the political identity, the partner, the leader, the consumer brand. The orientation runs anyway, with the inadequate object eventually failing to bear what was placed on it. The person who dismissed worship in principle has it loose in their life, attached to whatever has been compelling enough to absorb the displaced orientation.

Damaging worship. The opposite misread. The cult that exploits the orientation. The fundamentalism that compiles into hostility toward people outside the worshipped framework. The continuous self-renunciation that the worshipping framework demands at cost to actual functioning, relationships, and capacities. These configurations are not the only available configurations for worship; the same capacity runs differently when directed at different objects through different frameworks.

WHAT IS CURRENTLY BEING WORSHIPPED

The honest examination is uncomfortable.

What gets treated as ultimate? What gets organized around without question? What gets deferred to as larger than personal preference, even when it has not been consciously named as such? The career being arranged around. The political position held as identity-level commitment. The relationship that has been treated as the central organizing fact. The ideology absorbed and now being defended as if it were the truth. The product, the brand, the leader, the framework.

The examination often surfaces objects that had not been recognized as occupying this position. The recognition is the start of being able to ask whether the object warrants the orientation, or whether the orientation is being absorbed by an object that cannot bear it.

WHEN THE OBJECT DOES NOT WARRANT IT

Examine the object honestly.

The career: what is it, what does it actually do, what does it actually produce? Run the examination as if it were not the thing one’s life is organized around. The honest reading usually surfaces that the career is one configuration among many — useful, often valuable, occasionally important — and not the ultimate it has been treated as. The orientation does not survive the examination, because the object does not survive the examination.

Same procedure for the ideology, the brand, the leader, the relationship being held as ultimate. Sometimes the examination surfaces that the object holds up well — the relationship is in fact substantial, the work is genuinely valuable, the principle is genuinely worth orienting around. More often, the examination surfaces that the orientation was larger than what the object actually warranted.

The redirection of worship orientation toward objects that can bear it is more useful than the attempt to eliminate worship entirely. The mechanism is going to run regardless. The choice is what it runs toward.

OBJECTS THAT CAN BEAR THE ORIENTATION

Some objects have been developed across generations specifically to bear it.

The traditional religious frameworks, when engaged seriously, supply objects that have been refined over centuries by inhabitants doing the work of testing what holds up. The contemplative practices that develop the capacity for the orientation without specific dogma. The orientation toward what is most worth orienting toward in one’s specific understanding — beauty, truth, justice, love, the larger reality the framework gives access to.

The configurations vary. The underlying operation is similar. Orienting toward what can bear the orientation produces different effects in a life than orienting toward what cannot.

WORSHIP VS IDOLATRY

Worship oriented toward an object that warrants it produces specific effects: humility, larger reference, capacity to relativize personal preferences against something larger, stability under pressure that the person without the orientation does not have.

Idolatry — worship of objects that do not warrant the orientation — produces different effects: brittleness when the inadequate object fails to bear what was placed on it, distortion of operations when the inadequate object’s demands shape what should not be shaped by it, the eventual collapse the misplaced orientation produces when the underlying object reveals itself as inadequate.

The discrimination matters. The same operation deployed toward different objects produces different results. The one who confuses idolatry with worship — who treats the political tribe, the career, the leader, the brand as if they were ultimate — produces an idolatrous configuration regardless of how they frame what they are doing.

The capacity is in the hardware. What gets worshipped is a choice — often made without recognizing it as a choice.
