Nourishment

1 min read · 197 words

Nourishment is what the system actually absorbs — which is not always what the system consumes.

The organism can consume vast quantities of food without being nourished — if the food lacks the building materials the hardware requires. The organism can consume vast quantities of information without being nourished — if the information lacks applicable content. The organism can consume vast quantities of social interaction without being nourished — if the interaction lacks genuine connection.

Nourishment is what the system can metabolize into usable material. Fuel the body can convert to energy. Ideas the mind can integrate into understanding. Connection the social hardware can absorb into its regulatory function. The difference between consumption and nourishment is the difference between input and usable input.

The diagnostic from the chair: after consuming, check whether the system is nourished. The meal that leaves the body fueled and functional was nourishing. The meal that leaves it sluggish and depleted was consumed but not nourishing. The conversation that leaves the social system charged was nourishing. The conversation that leaves it drained was consumed but not nourishing.

Track what actually feeds the system. Then provide more of it.
